Facebook announced Tuesday that it is moving its more than 2,000 employees — and 600 million friends — to a new campus in Menlo Park, Calif.

The company’s new offices were the former home of Sun Microsystems, which was purchased by Oracle last year.

In a company press release, Facebook said it had been looking for a new location for some time, but struggled to find a place that could accommodate its “long-term business needs” as it continues to grow. Although the new offices are larger, the company said it hoped to create the same “small-community feel” that Facebook said it enjoyed on its previous campus in Palo Alto.

Employees will begin moving to the new offices in June or July, Facebook said, but will move “in waves” as the space is renovated.

Facebook has been engaged in a cat-and-mouse game while trying to find new space. It moved into its Palo Alto office in 2009, and quickly outgrew it, even though it, too, was supposed to be a “long-term campus solution.”

Just in case the company continues to grow too quickly, Facebook said it also purchased an 22-acre space adjacent to its current property that will be connected to the new campus by an underground tunnel. This area will be renovated only if Facebook continues to expand in the future. Given the company’s current track record, this should happen by the end of the year.
