Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day win musical show Grammy for ‘American Idiot’ album

“American Idiot,” the jukebox rock musical featuring songs by Green Day, is now a Grammy winner.

Billie Joe Armstrong and Green Day won the 2010 Grammy Award for musical show album for the musical, which opened in April at the St. James Theatre in New York.

The other nominees in the category were “Sondheim on Sondheim,” “A Little Night Music,” “Fela!” and “Promises, Promises.”

Armstrong wasn’t in Los Angeles to accept the award since he is currently playing the role of St. Jimmy in “American Idiot” on Broadway.

The “American Idiot” album was released by Reprise. The musical uses songs from Green Day’s albums “American Idiot” and “21st Century Breakdown,” both of which won Grammy awards in 2005 and 2010, respectively.

Armstrong will be performing in the Broadway production through Feb. 27. A national tour of “American Idiot” is in the works, with a start date expected in the fall.

National Tour of ‘American Idiot’ in the Works

Green Day fans around the country who cannot get to New York City won’t have to ask, “Are we the waiting?,” starting this fall. American Idiot, the Green Day-scored Broadway musical fantasia about three suburban pals taking different paths in a post-9/11 world, will journey to a city near you.

According to an Equity casting/audition notice, a touring production of the Michael Mayer-directed musical, with a score by Green Day, lyrics by front man Billie Joe Armstrong and libretto co-written by Mayer and Armstrong, will rehearse in the summer for an autumn launch.

No casting or dates have been announced for the tour, produced by Broadway producers Tom Hulce, Ira Pittelman and partners.

American Idiot, now at Broadway’s St. James Theatre and starring Armstrong as St. Jimmy (through Feb. 27, followed by Davey Havok in the role), has choreography by Steven Hoggett and musical supervision by Tom Kitt. Kevin Adams and Christine Jones won Tony Awards for their scenic and lighting design, respectively.

The musical had its world premiere in fall 2009 in Green Day’s old stomping ground: Berkeley, CA, at Berkeley Rep.

Mayer (a previous Tony winner for Spring Awakening) won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Best Direction of a Musical for American Idiot. The musical was nominated for a 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Green Day Drop Dookie: Wake-Up Video

If you had gone to see Green Day play one of their notorious early gigs in Berkeley in 1993, it would have been impossible to tell the size of the success the band would experience over the course of their career. Even though they had signed a deal with a major label, they still seemed like a shaggy, rag-tag bunch of punks who just wanted to play fast music and get high. But greatness was on the horizon for the boys, and before the sold out stadium tours, multi-platinum concept albums, video games and Broadway shows, there was Dookie, which was released on this day in 1994.

Green Day’s Dookie (the group’s third album) came at exactly the right time, as the rock world was knee-deep in grunge darkness and looking for a blast of youthful fun to offset all the doom and gloom. The album’s 14 songs (plus the creepy bonus track “All By Myself”) blew by in under 40 minutes, each one infused with big hooks, speed freak rhythms and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s adenoidal, in-your-face whine.

The album was a tour de force that built up slowly, first gaining a bit of attention because of the potty-mouthed lyrics to the first single “Longview.” Following the band’s memorable takeover of Woodstock ’94 that summer, songs like “When I Come Around,” “Welcome to Paradise” and especially “Basket Case” found themselves in permanent rotation on MTV, pumping out of radios across half a dozen formats and fueling the garage punk dreams of middle school kids everywhere.

Of course, Green Day later evolved, got darker, made a comeback, seemingly disappeared, made another comeback and eventually grew into one of the biggest rock bands in the world. But the road to 21st Century Breakdown really began with “Longview,” a quirky little three-chord jump about suburban ennui.

Melissa Etheridge Talks ‘American Idiot’

AP Photo/The Hartman Group, Paul Kolnik

NEW YORK — Melissa Etheridge says she’s having a “blast” getting in touch with her punk side.

The Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter will play drug dealer St. Jimmy in the hit Broadway musical based on Green Day’s rock opera, “American Idiot.”

“It’s been crazy. Oh my God, it’s so fun, though,” the folk rocker says. “I’m having a blast. I’m so outside of my comfort zone and I’m like living out high school fantasies.”

Etheridge, 49, takes over the part from Green Day’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong for eight shows, from Tuesday to Sunday. Armstrong, the composer and co-author of the musical, returns Feb. 10 as part of a 50-show stand.

The high-octane show follows three working-class characters as they wrestle with finding meaning in their lives. One joins the Army and is deployed to the Middle East, one becomes a father and struggles with domestic life, and one descends into a drug-fueled life in the city – thanks to St. Jimmy, a sort of charismatic dark angel originally written for a man.

Etheridge, best known for her songs “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” first saw the show at the St. James Theatre on 44th Street over Thanksgiving and was initially hesitant when producers suggested she might want to join the show.

“When they called me, at first I was like, `Aw, no. That’s really nice, but no,'” she recalls. “Then I kind of sat with it for a couple of days and thought, ‘This could be supercool and superfun.'”

Michael Mayer, the show’s director and story co-writer, says Etheridge has made the part her own during rehearsals. “It shakes everything up sonically from what we’re used to hearing, which is really wild,” he says. “She sounds beautiful on it, and haunting and there’s a very different emotionality that she brings to it.”

While Etheridge says singing the new songs, including “Know Your Enemy” and “Last Night on Earth,” isn’t too much of a stretch – “It’s all up in my rockin’ screaming range,” she says – the physical work of performing has been an adjustment.

01-26 – DAILY CALLER

Which Green Day song is on Paul Ryan’s iPod?

Republican Paul Ryan had a busy 24 hours Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The Daily Caller found out he’s making it through the day with some American punk rock music in his down moments.

Tuesday night Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican and rising star in his party, chairman of the House Budget Committee, and all around numbers geek wonder boy, gave the biggest speech of his life so far. He gave the official Republican Party response to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Wednesday morning, he was back at it early — at least by Capitol Hill standards. He chaired the Budget Committee to order at 9 a.m. for an orientation meeting and then promptly launched into the first hearing of this year a good 15 minutes ahead of the published 10 a.m. start time.

I caught Ryan as he walked off the House floor early on Wednesday afternoon, leaving what looked like a pleasant conversation with Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat and burgeoning media darling on the left (Ryan turns 41 on Saturday; Weiner is 46).

After we talked about the budget hearing, and he talked some more about what he thinks is the reason that the government’s top actuary for Medicare thinks his alternative plan to Obama’s health overhaul will bring down the cost of care more effectively than the president’s, I asked Ryan about his iPod.

Ryan walks to the Capitol for votes, back and forth from his office in the Longworth Office Building, with white ear buds either in his ears or over his shoulders. He’s done this for as long as I’ve covered him.

When I asked him today, Ryan said he had his iPod Nano on shuffle, and the current song was Green Day’s “Brain Stew.”

“It’s a good song,” Ryan said affably.

Take a look at the lyrics: all kind of potential parallels to Ryan’s job in there. Start with substituting dollars for sheep and you’re on your way. And the music video is below the lyrics.

Green Day
“Brain Stew/Jaded”

I’m having trouble trying to sleep
I’m counting sheep but running out
As time ticks by
And still I try
No rest for crosstops in my mind
On my own … here we go
My eyes feel like they’re gonna bleed
Dried up and bulging out my skull
My mouth is dry
My face is numb
Fucked up and spun out in my room
On my own … here we go
My mind is set on overdrive
The clock is laughing in my face
A crooked spine
My sense dulled
Passed the point of delerium
On my own… here we go

PHOTO CALL: American Idiot and Billie Joe Armstrong Celebrate 300th Performance on Broadway

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong rejoined the cast of American Idiot for 50 performances as “St. Jimmy” on New Year’s Day, arriving just in time to celebrate the musical’s 300th performance on Broadway. The cast, crew and producers celebrated the Jan. 8 milestone onstage.

American Idiot is inspired by Green Day’s punk album of the same name, and also uses the disc’s B-side tracks and numbers from the album “21st Century Breakdown.” A fresh, post-9/11 story has been attached to the songs. Three suburban buddies (John Gallagher Jr., Stark Sands, Michael Esper) take separate paths and encounter love, loss, violence, temptation and understanding along the way. St. Jimmy is a dark force that speaks to Gallagher’s Johnny, aka Jesus of Suburbia, who travels to the big city for a new experience.

Armstrong briefly stepped into the role of “St. Jimmy” last fall during the vacation of original cast member, Tony Vincent. Vincent played his final performance as “St. Jimmy” on Dec. 30
